The Superdome broke ground after legislation is passed in 1966 by the largest margin in Louisiana history and opened in 1976. Hurricane Katrina strikes 2005; Superdome serves as a “Refuge of Last Resort” for 30,000 evacuees; Dome is closed for 13 months for major repairs and improvements. The New Orleans Saints announced a 10-year contract with Mercedes-Benz USA to rename the recently renovated Louisiana Superdome the “Mercedes-Benz Superdome.”
